Bloomfield House is situated in Prince Edward County, Ontario. It is a country home for an active couple who enjoy wine, cooking, and entertaining. Surrounded by nature, open roads for cycling, wineries, and beautiful vistas, this property perfectly aligned with their lifestyle.

The land is flat and open, with low forests in the distance. Views are long and stretch far across the surrounding meadows. The shape of the home takes cues from surrounding agricultural references and captures the feeling of being planted on the ground looking across to the horizon.

This is a fully all-electric home designed with Solares’ expertise in energy efficient, air-tight building envelope. It functions with very low energy requirements, even with the big temperature swings and winter winds of The County.

On the exterior, the 2,800-square foot building takes a simple barn-like form, inspired by those seen in the County landscape. The two-toned siding brings a modern edge and accentuates the flat lines of the surrounding landscape, with a three-inch furring detail that creates a strong, thin shadow line cast onto the top of the white siding.

Upon entering the home, a vertical shaft of light streams down through a large skylight two levels above. The entry and main stair co-exist in this double-height space, bringing your experience immediately from the horizontality of the fields straight up to the sky. To the right is a functional mudroom with entry from the garage and back door, and to the left is a passageway to the large, vaulted great room.

The great room is the gathering space of this home. It provides ample space for relaxing, cooking, and entertaining – all hallmarks of the couple’s vision for their country life. Views from this space are expansive, stretching out in three directions. Three sets of patio doors expand the room onto the terrace, which in turns flows out to a pool deck and the fields beyond.

Upstairs the house is split into two sides, bridged together by the upper landing. To the east is a private primary suite, with picture windows, large walk-in closet, and ensuite bathroom. To the west are two bedrooms for guests, a shared washroom, a large laundry room, and a flexible space used as a gym.
